About The Position

Under the general direction of a Law Enforcement Sergeant, this position performs duties of a responsible nature related to the operation of the Fresh Start shelter facility for homeless individuals and homeless inmates reentering the community from the jail in need of assistance getting to a state of self-sufficiency. Intake Technicians will work directly with Fresh Start residents, mental health providers, and law enforcement in accordance with Sheriff’s Office General Orders. Technicians are expected to work both independently and in a team environment. This position is considered essential and, in the event of an emergency or natural disaster, employee must respond to work.

  • Knowledge of state laws, local ordinances, and agency policies, procedures, and orders.
  • Ability to effectively utilize equipment and devices assigned to the area of responsibility and report emergencies and equipment failures in a timely manner.
  • Ability to comprehend and perform verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to comprehend and perform all duties related to the position and do so without posing a direct threat to the safety or health of other individuals in the workplace.
  • Attend and pass a basic food safety, storage, and preparation class as provided by the agency.
  • Attend and pass basic courses in mental health/drug abuse education as provided by the agency.
  • Basic skill in the use of computers/data entry.
  • May involve lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling.
  • Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently and constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
  • Tasks may also involve standing, sitting, or walking for long periods.
  • Visual perception and discrimination are required as well as being able to isolate and distinguish critical sounds.
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED)
  • Two years of consistent work history or school attendance
  • Valid Florida Driver's License

Responsibilities

  • Monitor video and audio equipment, electronic doors, fire alarm systems, intercom/public address systems and light circuit panels.
  • Observe and document pertinent information provided during intake and through daily interactions, to include basic computer/data entry skills.
  • Identify residents’ controlled substances and injectable medications by labeling and storing appropriately; conducting medication disbursement as needed for residents, ensuring proper disposal of diabetic supplies and sharps.
  • Observe the need for and obtain hygiene supplies and clean clothing for the residents.
  • Use de-escalation techniques when dealing with mentally ill and/or intoxicated individuals until a deputy, social worker, or other appropriate staff member can respond.
  • Recognize signs of impairment and take appropriate action.
  • Implement resident housing assignment changes as needed or directed.
  • Prepare reports and documentation.
  • Arrange transportation for residents to/from programs, bus stations, and other shelters.
  • Contact appropriate law enforcement/licensed clinical health worker for potential Baker Act situations.
  • Coordinate on-site meal service for residents.
  • Initiate emergency procedures when necessary.
  • Completes assigned work correctly, on time, within budget, and according to agency policy.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
