About the position

The Reference and Instruction Librarian plays a crucial role in enhancing library services by planning, coordinating, and delivering formal library instruction across various academic disciplines. This position involves providing reference services to university students, faculty, and staff, as well as assisting in the development of library collections. The librarian will also supervise student employees and contribute to the overall evaluation and improvement of library services.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, coordinates, and delivers formal library instruction to classes across all academic disciplines.
  • Prepares instructional materials including online tutorials, handouts, bibliographies, research guides, and other materials as needed.
  • Serves as the primary provider of impromptu reference services within the Hattiesburg campus library and all online library assistance platforms.
  • Trains and supervises student employees in the performance of reference duties.
  • Provides training in reference services and resources for library personnel.
  • Responsible for surveying and assessing the effectiveness of the library's formal instruction program.
  • Assists with hiring, scheduling, training, supervising, and evaluating the Hattiesburg library's student employees, as needed.
  • Oversees evening library operations as needed, providing circulation and reference assistance to patrons.
  • Participates in planning and evaluation of library services and keeps informed about professional issues related to job responsibilities.
  • Performs other duties and tasks as needed to ensure normal library operations.

Requirements

  • American Library Association accredited master's degree.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to use common office productivity software, including Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, and Outlook).
  • Ability to learn WCU's accounting and student database software.
  • Ability and desire to learn new technical skills.
  • Ability to respect and adhere to confidentiality requirements related to student and library records.
