About the position

The Instructional Designer at the University of West Alabama will collaborate with faculty, staff, and administrators to design, develop, and implement high-quality online, hybrid, and face-to-face learning experiences. This role focuses on supporting instructional innovation, ensuring alignment with pedagogical best practices, accessibility standards, and technological advancements to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with faculty to design and develop engaging, interactive, and learner-centered courses for various delivery modalities (online, hybrid, and traditional).
  • Apply instructional design theories, principles, and best practices to develop course materials, assessments, and activities.
  • Create multimedia learning resources, including video, audio, and interactive content, using relevant tools and software.
  • Provide one-on-one and group training sessions for faculty on instructional strategies, technology integration, and course design tools (e.g., LMS).
  • Offer ongoing support and consultation for faculty regarding course revisions and updates.
  • Promote the adoption of new teaching technologies and methodologies that enhance learning outcomes.
  • Ensure all courses meet institutional quality standards and guidelines, such as Quality Matters or equivalent.
  • Review course content to ensure compliance with accessibility standards (e.g., ADA, WCAG).
  • Evaluate course performance through feedback, analytics, and student assessments, recommending improvements as needed.
  • Stay current with emerging educational technologies and evaluate their potential impact on teaching and learning at UWA.
  • Support the implementation and integration of instructional technologies in courses.
  • Troubleshoot technical issues related to course delivery tools and software.
  • Work collaboratively with faculty, academic departments, IT staff, and other stakeholders to achieve institutional goals for teaching and learning.
  • Participate in instructional design research and innovation projects to enhance educational practices.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of instructional design policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Two years experience designing and developing courses in a learning management system (e.g., Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle) or a Master's Degree in Instructional Design, Education Technology, Curriculum Development, or a related field.
  • Strong knowledge of instructional design principles, learning theories, and best practices for online learning.
  • Proficiency with multimedia development tools and educational technologies.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Doctoral degree in Instructional Design, Educational Technology, or related discipline.
  • Experience in higher education settings.
  • Certification in Quality Matters (QM) or similar quality assurance programs.
  • Familiarity with accessibility standards and universal design for learning (UDL).
  • Experience integrating emerging technologies such as AI, AR/VR, and adaptive learning platforms.
