About the position

The Instructional Designer (IT Academic Technology Specialist) at Baruch College is responsible for developing and implementing high-quality online programs in collaboration with faculty and program leadership. This role focuses on enhancing student success through innovative digital learning experiences and effective instructional design practices, utilizing the Brightspace Learning Management System (LMS).

Responsibilities

  • Implement a consultative 'backwards' instructional design process in partnership with faculty to develop fully asynchronous and hybrid online courses.
  • Develop weekly course storyboards and build learning sequence content into the Brightspace LMS.
  • Ensure best practices for student engagement and accessibility are consistently implemented.
  • Develop and implement learner personas and resources to center course design around learner needs.
  • Identify creative media and interactive learning opportunities in online courses.
  • Review course materials and make recommendations regarding quality, engagement, grammatical accuracy, and functionality using instructional design rubrics.
  • Author skill building and professional development resources to support institutional growth in instructional design.
  • Project manage 6-8 course development projects simultaneously and report on their status to stakeholders.
  • Implement project plans for each course under development and escalate challenges to program leadership.
  • Facilitate meetings with technical and subject matter experts and communicate strategically with team members.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree and four years' relevant experience required.
  • Master's degree in instructional design, instructional technology, digital pedagogy, or a related field preferred.
  • Demonstrated vision and passion for creating inclusive learning experiences.
  • Experience using development tools (e.g., Powerpoint, Google Slides, Photoshop, Canva) to produce and edit content.
  • Ability to work in a highly collaborative, team-based environment.
  • Experience working with higher education faculty to develop distance education programs and provide technology support.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of distance education pedagogies and technologies, including current instructional theories and principles applicable to web-based learning.
  • Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Excellent management and organization skills.
  • Proactive and diplomatic problem-solving skills.
  • Experience ensuring learning experience designs consider learner needs and accessibility standards.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Quality Matters rubrics.
  • Knowledge of OSQCR standards.
