About The Position

The Special Education (SPED) Instructional Coach is responsible for fostering teaching excellence and driving student achievement for students with disabilities across inclusive and self-contained settings. This role focuses on enhancing evidence-based special education practices, supporting high-quality implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), and promoting data-driven decision-making and compliance with IDEA and local special education regulations. The coach will work directly with special education teachers, general education teachers, related service providers, and school leaders to build instructional capacity, ensure students make meaningful progress toward their IEP goals, and support access to the general education curriculum to the greatest extent appropriate. This position primarily supports Tier 1 instruction through inclusive practices while also strengthening specialized instruction in self-contained classrooms.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Special Education, Curriculum & Instruction, Educational Leadership, or a related field preferred.
  • Valid Washington D.C. special education teaching credential or license.
  • Minimum of 5–7 years of highly effective special education teaching experience across inclusive and self-contained settings, demonstrating measurable student growth.
  • Experience in instructional coaching, mentoring, or leading professional development for adult learners in special education.
  • Deep knowledge of IDEA, IEP development, Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) practices, progress monitoring, and accommodations/modifications.
  • Experience with behavior supports (FBA/BIP), PBIS, and restorative practices.
  • Strong skills in curriculum adaptation, assessment design, and data analysis for special populations.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and facilitation skills; ability to build rapport and influence across teams.
  • Commitment to student-centered instruction, equity, and inclusive school communities.
  • Proficiency integrating technology and assistive technology into instruction.

Responsibilities

  • Design and facilitate ongoing, high-impact professional development aligned to schoolwide priorities, with a focus on inclusive practices, co-teaching models (e.g., station, parallel, team teaching), and differentiated instruction for diverse learners.
  • Model strategies and provide follow-up coaching to support classroom implementation.
  • Share current SPED research, evidence-based interventions, and assessment tools.
  • Track PD participation, outcomes, and teacher implementation evidence.
  • Lead and support structured co-planning cycles between special education and general education teachers, ensuring alignment of IEP goals, grade-level standards, and rigorous, student-centered instruction.
  • Provide classroom coaching and feedback to ensure rigorous, student-centered instruction.
  • Support development of standards-aligned lesson plans for inclusive and self-contained settings.
  • Maintain records of coaching cycles and teacher progress.
  • Build staff capacity in analyzing multiple data sources (IEP progress monitoring, formative/summative assessments, behavioral data, and MTSS data) to inform instructional decisions and targeted interventions.
  • Facilitate data meetings and professional learning communities (PLCs) to support teachers in identifying trends, adjusting instruction, and monitoring the impact of interventions on student outcomes.
  • Assist teachers in developing and using formative and summative assessments and progress-monitoring systems that measure both academic and IEP-specific progress.
  • Track and report student outcome metrics to inform tiered interventions.
  • Develop and implement systems and tools for tracking student progress, coaching impact, and instructional effectiveness across SPED and inclusive settings.
  • Maintain accurate records of coaching cycles, PD, IEP support, student progress, and documented impact.
  • Produce regular progress and compliance reports for school leadership.
  • Review and refine systems based on usage and outcomes.
  • Partner with school leadership to align professional development and coaching cycles to school improvement goals, compliance expectations, and student achievement outcomes.
  • Collaborate with special education coordinators, department leads, and related service providers to adapt curriculum and coordinate services.
  • Assist with scheduling, caseload organization, assessment administration/proctoring, and implementation of accommodations.
  • Communicate effectively with families, teachers, providers, administrators, and external agencies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
