About the position

The Instructional Assistant for Special Education plays a crucial role in supporting students with disabilities by assisting in the coordination of instructional programs and ensuring compliance with Individual Education Plans (IEPs). This position involves monitoring student progress, maintaining confidentiality, and creating a conducive learning environment while collaborating with teachers and other staff members.

Responsibilities

  • Provides support and assistance to teachers in coordinating instructional programs for special education students, including familiarity with students' IEPs.
  • Ensures an encouraging, caring, safe, and healthful environment for all students.
  • Assists teachers with strategies related to the implementation of students' behavioral intervention plans.
  • Aids teachers with planning, organizing, evaluating instructional activities, and preparing necessary materials.
  • Demonstrates professional and technical skills necessary to function effectively in the classroom and support student achievement.
  • Maintains a positive disposition and exercises good judgement when dealing with students.
  • Provides in-class support while promoting progress towards independence and self-determination for all students.
  • Assists teachers with implementation of assistive technology and augmentative communication devices in the classroom.
  • Compiles, maintains, and files reports, records, and other required documents while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Participates in district staff development programs and continued professional growth in the area of assignment.
  • Coordinates and facilitates student transitions between classes and assists with special health care needs.
  • Attends and successfully completes specialized training as determined by the student's IEP.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Working toward an Associate's degree in early childhood education or a related field, or a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential.
  • Experience working with or assisting individuals with special needs.
  • Ability to protect confidentiality in accordance with FERPA and other applicable laws.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and collaborate effectively with others.
  • Ability to motivate students and monitor their safety and well-being.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written.

Nice-to-haves

  • First Aid and CPR certifications.
