About the position

The position involves inspecting and documenting construction progress to ensure compliance with plans, specifications, and all applicable standards. This includes direct observation of work in progress and documentation through written words, pictures, and tickets, utilizing both electronic and hard copy media. The inspector will coordinate with contractor representatives on scheduling of work, interpretation of plans and specifications, and acceptability of materials. They will also represent Harris County to public and private individuals and agencies affected by construction activities. An inspector is expected to effectively provide inspection on multiple maintenance and capital projects simultaneously.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect and document construction progress to ensure compliance with plans and specifications.
  • Coordinate with contractor representatives on scheduling, interpretation of plans, and material acceptability.
  • Attend meetings, prepare correspondence, and create records and files as required.
  • Provide on-site, direct inspection to verify quality and quantity of work.
  • Record work completed in a computer-based reporting system.
  • Complete daily reports within 72 hours of work performed.
  • Update project schedule/calendar daily to describe issues and impacts.
  • Communicate and coordinate with contractors and Harris County personnel.
  • Manage and schedule testing and coordinate with construction materials testing personnel.
  • Attend and participate in project meetings and inspections.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited high school or possess an acceptable equivalency diploma.
  • Minimum of two years of verifiable experience in construction oversight.
  • Ability to read and interpret written procedures, specifications, and plans.
  • Knowledge of construction standards, practices, and techniques.
  • Ability to prepare written documentation using proper grammar and punctuation.
  • Working knowledge of computers and computer-based programs.
  • Ability to measure, quantify, and calculate quantities.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to maintain positive relationships.
  • Valid Class 'C' Texas Driver's License.

Nice-to-haves
