About the position

This position involves performing highly skilled technical work in securing and maintaining compliance with all applicable building codes and regulations governing building construction, alterations, and repairs. The role includes examining plans, blueprints, diagrams, surveys, and similar documentation, as well as inspecting commercial, industrial, and other job sites. The individual will independently interpret and impartially apply pertinent codes and regulations while acting as a code enforcement officer. Regular interaction with property owners, contractors, and the general public is required, with a strong emphasis on providing high levels of customer service.

Responsibilities

  • Analyzes and interprets complex plans and specifications submitted for building, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing permits to evaluate compliance with applicable code requirements and State regulations.
  • Inspects building construction to ensure compliance with codes and approved building permits.
  • Detects and locates defective workmanship and materials, taking appropriate corrective measures based on the stage of construction.
  • Measures dimensions and verifies level, alignment, and elevation of structures and fixtures to ensure compliance with building plans and codes.
  • Renders final approval of appropriate permits upon completion of construction.
  • Independently investigates and documents alleged code violations acting as a code enforcement officer.
  • Investigates complaints and/or unauthorized building construction, recommending approved construction methods, practices, and materials to contractors and property owners.
  • Prepares and issues notices of violation and warnings, posts stop work orders as required, and attends hearings and appears in court as needed.
  • Enforces all aspects of County Ordinances including complaint investigations, posting determinations, research, and actions pertaining to unsafe structures.
  • Confers with and advises contractors, property owners, architects, engineers, and the general public regarding interpretation and application of building codes and other applicable laws and regulations.
  • Prepares and maintains necessary records and reports, drafting business letters to contractors, architects, engineers, and manufacturers as needed.
  • Performs other related work, including weather or other extreme emergency duties, as required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Standard License in one discipline (Building, Mechanical, Plumbing, Electrical) issued by the Florida Building Code Administrators and Inspectors Board (BCAIB) as an Inspector or Plans Examiner required.
  • In lieu of licensure, four (4) or more years of verifiable experience as, or under the supervision of, a registered or state-certified general, building, or residential contractor is required.
  • Valid driver license with valid Florida driver license within 30 days of hire.
  • Provisional Licensure from BCAIB as an Inspector or Plans Examiner required within the first 120 days of employment.
  • Standard Licensure(s) required within one year of board approval of Provisional License.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of construction design methods, techniques, and materials.
  • Understanding of the permitting process, including intake, review, and issuance of building permits.
  • Knowledge of regulatory compliance necessary to successfully perform job duties, including state and local codes, laws, and regulations governing building construction and associated work.
  • Familiarity with computer applications and software programs required to perform job duties.
