About the position

The Housing Supervising Attorney at Bread for the City is responsible for leading the housing law team, which provides civil legal services primarily in housing law. This role involves mentoring and training staff, maintaining a small caseload, and participating in advocacy and policy reform efforts related to housing issues in Washington, D.C. The ideal candidate will have significant experience in housing law and litigation, as well as strong interpersonal and management skills.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Supervising Attorneys in leading the housing team.
  • Mentor and train staff, loaned associates, pro bono attorneys, and law clerks.
  • Represent clients and maintain a small caseload in housing-related matters.
  • Participate in joint projects with other legal services providers.
  • Support housing-related advocacy and policy reform efforts.

Requirements

  • Must be admitted to the D.C. Bar or eligible for admission.
  • 5-7 years of post J.D. legal experience, including at least 3 years of litigation experience.
  • 4 years of housing law expertise/practice, preferably in D.C.
  • 2 years of supervisory experience.
  • Prior experience in a legal services or public interest setting.
  • Ability to independently perform legal analysis and train staff attorneys.
  • Excellent interpersonal and management skills.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and research skills.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent negotiation skills.
  • Ability to proceed effectively in court with little preparation time.
  • Good judgment and high degree of flexibility.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse range of people.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) skills preferred but not required.
