Covenant House California (CHC) is a nonprofit organization that provides sanctuary and support for youth overcoming homelessness, ages 18-24. In our Los Angeles location, which is our flagship site, we offer a full continuum of housing and support services to young people. Over the past 36 years, our services have grown and expanded, and we serve more than 900 young people every year. As this position provides direct care to young people that are 18-24 years old, we require that applicants are at least 25 years old. POSITION SUMMARY: Housekeeping & Maintenance Technicians are an essential and core position on our operations team. CHC is looking for passionate, qualified Housekeeping & Maintenance Technicians who are skilled in supporting our facilities and operations need to overall support our youth who have experienced homelessness and human trafficking, have experienced trauma identify as LGBTQ+, are gender non-conforming, and/or who often face multiple issues and have complex needs. Youth Engagement Specialists will have knowledge and/or experience utilizing a strengths-based, harm reduction framework, using trauma-informed practices and will value working within a multi-disciplinary team to create a safe inclusive environment for all. All CHC staff work together to facilitate safety and comprehensive programming for youth in our housing programs. The Housekeeping & Maintenance Technician is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, functional, and welcoming environment for residents, guests, staff, and visitors. This position performs daily housekeeping duties, routine building maintenance, preventative maintenance tasks, minor repairs, and general handyman services throughout the facility. The ideal candidate is dependable, detail-oriented, customer-service focused, and capable of independently managing multiple priorities while maintaining a high standard of cleanliness and facility appearance. Overnight shifts are awake, and staff must complete overnight checklist to ensure facility is prepared for next day.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum 2 years of housekeeping, custodial, facilities maintenance, or handyman experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of cleaning methods, equipment, and chemicals.
  • Experience with basic carpentry, plumbing, painting, and general repairs.
  • Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, and maintenance equipment.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Must have a valid CA driver’s license and good driving record to commute between sites for repair needs.
  • Must be at least 25 years old.

Responsibilities

  • Perform daily cleaning of offices, common areas, restrooms, kitchens, dining areas, meeting rooms, and other facility spaces.
  • Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, and sanitize assigned areas.
  • Clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces in accordance with health and safety standards.
  • Replenish restroom and janitorial supplies as needed.
  • Collect and dispose of trash and recycling.
  • Report housekeeping concerns, safety hazards, or facility issues to management.
  • Assist with room turnovers, move-ins, move-outs, and special cleaning projects.
  • Maintain housekeeping equipment and janitorial storage areas in a clean and organized manner.
  • Perform routine repairs including drywall patching, painting, door and lock adjustments, fixture replacement, and furniture repairs.
  • Conduct preventative maintenance inspections and complete assigned work orders.
  • Replace light bulbs, ceiling tiles, filters, and other building components.
  • Troubleshoot minor plumbing issues such as clogged drains, running toilets, and leaking faucets.
  • Troubleshoot basic electrical issues such as replacing switches, outlets, and lighting fixtures where permitted.
  • Assemble furniture, shelving, and equipment.
  • Assist with facility improvement projects and site beautification efforts.
  • Monitor building systems and report major repair needs to supervisors or contracted vendors.
  • Support emergency response and after-hours maintenance needs when required.
  • Follow all OSHA, health and safety, and organizational policies and procedures.
  • Maintain a safe work environment and use proper personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Ensure tools, equipment, and chemicals are stored and used safely.
  • Identify and report safety hazards immediately.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance logs, inspection records, and work order documentation.
  • Interact professionally and respectfully with residents, youth, staff, visitors, vendors, and community partners.
  • Respond to maintenance requests in a timely and courteous manner.
  • Support a positive, inclusive, and welcoming environment for all occupants.
