About the position

The Mathematics Teacher at Ferris High School is responsible for developing students' skills and competence in both basic and complex mathematical principles, equations, formulas, and calculations. The teacher will also help students understand the application of mathematics in solving practical problems. This position is under the general supervision of the School Principal and involves creating a safe and conducive classroom environment for individualized and small group instruction. The teacher will develop lesson plans, administer the mathematics curriculum, and conduct ongoing assessments of student learning and progress.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and administers mathematics curriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives.
  • Promotes a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction, and student learning.
  • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials for subject area, and translates lesson plans into learning experiences.
  • Teaches knowledge and skills in mathematics, including concepts such as real and imaginary numbers, formulas, calculations, and geometry.
  • Designs learning activities to demonstrate the application of mathematics to everyday existence and problem-solving.
  • Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning and progress, and modifies instructional methods to fit individual student's needs.
  • Maintains familiarity with district and Connecticut State standardized tests for the purpose of adapting curriculum.
  • Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field.
  • Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities.
  • Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
  • Ensures that student conduct conforms to the school's standards and school district policies.
  • Coordinates with other professional staff members and participates in faculty meetings and committees.
  • Selects and requisitions appropriate books, instructional aids, and other supplies and equipment.

Requirements

  • State Certification as a Mathematics Education Teacher (#029 or #229 as appropriate).
  • Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to teaching assignment.
  • Master's Degree preferred.
  • Successful prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade level preferred.
