About the position

The High School Assistant Girls Basketball Coach at Morton High School is responsible for supporting the athletic director and building principal in planning, coordinating, and directing the girls basketball program. The role emphasizes participation and sportsmanship over win-loss records, aiming to foster physical development, leadership, and good citizenship among student-athletes.

Responsibilities

• Be responsible to the building principal and the school Director of Physical Education and Athletics.
• Establish objectives for the program and develop a plan for the implementation of these objectives.
• Develop the athletic program to promote participation and friendly competition.
• Recognize athletic activities as integral to a balanced educational program and coordinate with the school schedule.
• Provide vigorous activities to develop physical fitness and skills.
• Develop principles of leadership and good citizenship through sportsmanship.
• Foster self-expression, self-confidence, and self-discipline in students.
• Know the rules, regulations, and policies set by the school board and athletic associations.
• Prepare an athletic budget, select officials, requisition equipment, and arrange transportation and schedules.
• Follow procedures for caring for injured athletes and ensure required physical examinations are completed.
• Check player eligibility and maintain eligibility lists in coordination with the Director of Athletics.
• Develop public relations with parents and media personnel.
• Attend staff meetings and professional growth activities as approved by the principal.
• Cooperate with other athletic staff to establish rules for conduct and appearance.

• Expert knowledge of basketball and coaching techniques.
• Thorough understanding of the physical, mental, and emotional needs of participants.
• Skill in teaching the fundamentals of basketball.
• Desirable character and personality traits with high moral standards.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, parents, and staff.
• Knowledge of rules and regulations pertaining to basketball coaching.
• Availability to supervise activities beyond the school day.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience in coaching at the high school level or higher.
• Certification in first aid and CPR.
