About the position

The City of Farmington is seeking a Heavy Truck and Equipment Mechanic to work under the close supervision of the Vehicle Maintenance Superintendent or designee. This position involves maintaining the vehicles in the City's fleet and mechanical equipment, performing preventive maintenance tasks, and providing emergency field assistance to disabled equipment as needed. The mechanic will operate various diagnostic tools and perform repairs on a range of mechanical systems, ensuring effective working relationships with other employees and the public.

Responsibilities

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, officials, and the public.
  • Operate a motor vehicle to assist in departmental business.
  • Perform semi-skilled and skilled work in maintaining the City's fleet and mechanical equipment.
  • Carry out preventive maintenance tasks for all vehicles and mechanical equipment.
  • Operate diagnostic scan tools and various hand, electric, and air-driven tools.
  • Test, service, and repair vehicles and mechanical equipment.
  • Inspect, adjust, and replace necessary units and related parts.
  • Repair brake, engine, electrical, fuel, transmission, ignition, air, exhaust, axle assemblies, and related systems.
  • Conduct analyses and inspections of vehicles and mechanical systems.
  • Requisition equipment, parts, and supplies for maintenance.
  • Maintain daily records and prepare reports as needed.
  • Be on call for weekends and holidays on a rotating schedule.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent plus specialized training in mechanics or maintenance management.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record for the past three years.
  • Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is mandatory.
  • A.S.E. certifications required within nine months of hire date.
  • Three years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of equipment and on-highway truck mechanics, including automotive gas and diesel engines.
  • Considerable knowledge of diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, gas engine, and electrical systems.
  • Working knowledge of safety precautions common to municipal maintenance and repair activities.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Some computer experience is preferred.
  • Ability to carry out assigned projects to completion in a timely manner.
  • Ability to keep work area clean and organized.
