Heavy Equipment Operator- Utility Replacement

About the position

The Public Works Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for performing duties primarily related to operating heavy equipment. The equipment operated will vary by area of assignment, and the role involves performing technical work on maintenance projects that require related experience. The work is conducted with limited supervision.

Responsibilities

• Operates a variety of light to heavy equipment at assigned job sites, including Gradall, tractor trailer, excavator, bulldozer, roller, dump trucks, concrete mixers, backhoes, forklifts, loaders, skid steer, concrete breaker, and other related items.
• For wastewater operations, operates a jet truck, vacuum trucks, and a CCTV truck.
• Performs preventative maintenance on applicable equipment.
• Participates in monitoring and maintaining appropriate inventory levels to ensure efficient division operations.
• Engages in skilled maintenance activities such as repairing water and sewer lines, installing and repairing fire hydrants, monitoring water and sewer lines for leaks, and implementing landscape and asphalt repairs.
• Monitors the work of external contractors, providing technical guidance and ensuring contract terms are met.
• Sets up traffic warning devices and barricades, directing traffic around work sites and inspecting barricades daily.
• Prepares and cleans up work sites.
• Transports equipment and materials to designated job sites.
• Participates in winter weather operational activities.
• Responds to emergency operation and on-call situations.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Knowledge of applicable Federal, State and Local vehicle ordinances.
• Knowledge of construction practices in assigned area of responsibility.
• Knowledge of tools, materials, and methods in assigned specialty area.
• Knowledge of occupational hazards and related safety precautions.
• Knowledge of applicable maintenance equipment.
• Knowledge of a variety of hand and power tools.
• Skilled in reading maps, schematics, and other related drawings.
• Skilled in writing, reading and comprehending instructions in English.
• Skilled in performing skilled maintenance work in a safe, efficient manner.
• Skilled in performing manual labor.
• Skilled in operating and maintaining small to heavy-sized equipment and trucks.
• Skilled in performing skilled maintenance and repair activities.
• Skilled in operating, maintaining, and repairing a variety of hand and power tools.
• Skilled in gathering and analyzing information and making recommendations based on findings.
• Skilled in operating a computer and related software applications.
• Skilled in communicating effectively with a variety of individuals.
