About The Position

The City of Wilmington is seeking a Heavy Equipment & Auto Mechanic to service heavy-duty trucks and equipment by completing preventive maintenance and routine repairs. This role also involves performing shop maintenance and housekeeping, conducting service calls, and picking up parts from vendors. Requirements

  • Six months to one year of advanced study or training beyond high school or GED education.
  • Three (3) years of experience performing maintenance on a variety of different vehicles OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Current Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification OR the ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire.
  • Refrigerant Recovery Certification OR the ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire.
  • Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) OR the ability to obtain within 180 days of hire.
  • Must pass a driving check and criminal background check.
  • Must pass a post-offer drug screen.
  • Mechanics will be required to maintain certifications as a condition of continued employment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventative maintenance in accordance with guidelines established by Wilmington Fleet Garage, including DOT inspections.
  • Perform inspections of engine, driveline, steering, suspension, safety/emergency equipment, and body components.
  • Change all fluids and filters.
  • Properly document all repairs needed.
  • Check vehicle operation upon completion of repairs.
  • Perform proper diagnosis and repair of Fleet Heavy Equipment according to manufacturer standards, including engine, transmission, drive train, steering/suspension, electronics, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
  • Clean and maintain the shop by cleaning all bays, removing trash and debris, sweeping floors, and properly disposing of all supplies and used materials.
