The heat straightener is responsible for the fairness preparation and straightness of structural metal components. Straightens metal workpieces to blueprint specifications using hand tools. Reports directly to Foreman.
Responsibilities
Locates and marks frames and longitudinal positions.
Shapes steel using tack welding clips and brackets.
Bends, flanges, and shapes plate, beams, and other heavy metal parts, utilizes a heat shrinking torch and water wand.
Line and spot heats deck panels as needed.
Straightens doors and bulkheads by use of hand tools.
Rolls workpiece on flat surface or mounts and rotates it between centers to ascertain irregularities visually, with Bridge Cam gauge, or Gap gauge.
Measures straightened workpiece for conformance with specifications, using straightedge, micrometers, and calipers.
Requirements
Knowledge of blueprints and drawings.
Ability to operate a shrinking torch and water wand.
Ability to straighten decks, bulkheads, doors, and tee beams.
Knowledge of metal properties.
Nice-to-haves
Prior experience as a Shipfitter and/or Heat Straightner is preferred.
Previous experience in shipbuilding industry or any equivalent combination of experience and training which results in the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
