About the position
The Health and Wellness Specialist (HWS) at the International Rescue Committee (IRC) plays a vital role in coordinating healthcare services for newly arrived refugees. This position involves working closely with state and county health professionals to ensure that refugees receive quality preventative, curative, and behavioral health care in a culturally sensitive manner. The HWS is responsible for guiding and empowering refugees to lead healthy lives in their new environment, managing service provision, conducting client assessments, and facilitating access to necessary health services.
Responsibilities
- Assist in providing comprehensive services to IRC clients enrolled in Refugee Medical services, Behavioral Health services, and Refuge Health screening.
- Support timely provision and coordination of medical, dental, and mental health services for clients with serious health conditions.
- Assist clients in selecting a primary care physician (PCP) and scheduling initial appointments.
- Help clients resolve barriers to accessing medical and mental health services, including transportation and financial issues.
- Oversee coordination of medical schedules with clinical staff and volunteers for refugee health screenings.
- Assist clients with billing issues and coordination between Medicaid or other insurance plans and health providers.
- Ensure urgent medication needs are addressed and clients understand how to fill and refill prescriptions.
- Maintain compliance with case file management and reporting requirements.
- Participate in program meetings and staff development activities.
Requirements
- Educational background in social work, public health, or health promotion.
- Minimum of 1 year relevant or related job experience.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly.
- Demonstrated ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.
- Flexibility and adaptability with strong problem-solving skills.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Fluency in English, both written and spoken.
- Clean driving record, valid driver's license, and access to a personal vehicle or familiarity with public transportation.
