About the position

Corrections professionals who foster a humane and secure environment and ensure public safety by preparing individuals for successful reentry into our communities. This position is located in the Health Services Department at a Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) correctional facility. The incumbent is primarily responsible for providing emergency assessment and medical care to inmate patients, acting as the first responder at the scene of sudden illness or emergency, and determining the most appropriate method of transportation to the local hospital in consultation with a medical provider. The role also involves prioritizing treatments for patients with multiple problems and employing established medical emergency procedures, techniques, methods, and equipment, including emergency triage. Additionally, the incumbent is responsible for maintaining the security of the institution, which is a primary duty.

Responsibilities

  • Provide emergency assessment and medical care to inmate patients.
  • Act as the first responder at the scene of sudden illness or emergency.
  • Determine the appropriate method of transportation to the local hospital.
  • Prioritize treatments for patients with multiple medical issues.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Must possess a current, active, and unrestricted certification as a National Registry Paramedic (NRP) or a current, active state Paramedic license in the state of the position being applied for.
  • Two full years of graduate education or a master's degree directly related to the work of the position, or one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in the federal service.
  • Experience in obtaining patient vital signs, performing venipuncture, and initiating IV therapy.
  • Experience using various types of medical emergency equipment such as EKG, telemetry/defibrillator, and suction.
