About the position

The Health Information Management Technician plays a crucial role in maintaining the integrity of health information management (HIM) within the hospital. This position involves ensuring that medical records are accurate, complete, and compliant with legal and regulatory standards, including HIPAA. The technician collaborates with hospital staff and physicians to manage medical records effectively, demonstrating proficiency in medical terminology and record-keeping practices.

Responsibilities

  • Assemble, analyze, abstract, scan, and maintain medical records to ensure verifiable documentation.
  • Work with hospital staff, physicians, and administration to ensure timely, accurate, and complete medical records.
  • Respond to inquiries and requests regarding protected health information in compliance with HIPAA guidelines.
  • Maintain record indexes and storage and retrieval systems.
  • Order supplies for the department to meet budget requirements and ensure adequate stock.
  • Demonstrate excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Complete annual health, safety, and education requirements for professional growth.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient and employee information.
  • Attend mandatory in-services and staff meetings.
  • Represent the organization positively and professionally.
  • Comply with organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
  • Communicate the mission, ethics, and goals of the hospital and department.
  • Maintain current licensure/certification for the position.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required; enrollment in a college/university preferred.
  • Associate's Degree in Health Information Technology (HIT) or enrollment in an accredited HIT program preferred.
  • Certification as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) by AHIMA preferred.
  • Minimum of 1 year of HIM experience preferred.
  • Fluent in reading, writing, and speaking English.
  • Medical data abstracting skills.
