About the position

The Head of Technical Direction and Theater Department Production Manager at Rutgers University-New Brunswick is a dual role that combines academic responsibilities with production management. The position involves teaching technical direction courses, advising students, and maintaining professional activity in the field. Additionally, the Production Manager oversees production budgets, schedules, and technical staff for multiple theater productions each academic year, ensuring compliance with safety regulations and contributing to production policies.

Responsibilities

  • Teach courses within the theater program's Technical Direction concentration at all undergraduate levels.
  • Advise undergraduate students on their artistic progression through the Technical Direction concentration.
  • Maintain professional activity and/or scholarly research in the field.
  • Hold regular office hours and attend department and program meetings.
  • Participate in recruiting efforts and contribute to shared governance by serving on committees.
  • Maintain and develop curricula and participate in undergraduate review cycles.
  • Support collaboration initiatives within Mason Gross and across the University.
  • Supervise production budgets, calendars, meetings, labor, construction/load-in, and crew calls.
  • Oversee a technical staff of 7 to 10 people for the timely completion of technical elements for productions.
  • Coordinate the maintenance of all theater department performance spaces and equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with public assembly safety and fire regulations.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years professional experience in the field.
  • Demonstrated teaching success in technical direction or related areas.
  • Substantial knowledge of technical direction and current industry practices and trends.
  • Ability to work creatively and collaboratively with faculty, students, staff, and school leadership.
