About the position

America's Credit Unions is a leading company in the Financial Services Trade Association sector, known for our advocacy on behalf of all Credit Unions. We are seeking a highly experienced Head of Compliance to lead the Compliance team within the Policy Engagement department of the Advocacy division. This position reports to the VP, Policy Engagement & Credit Union Operations. This position is a hybrid role located in our Washington DC office.

Responsibilities

  • Work cross-functionally within the Advocacy division to bring compliance issues to the forefront of our advocacy efforts.
  • Actively engages with credit unions, identifying and resolving compliance and examination issues, and addressing inquiries from credit unions requiring expertise about new regulations and other ongoing operational compliance questions from leagues and credit unions.
  • Develop, update, or otherwise procure content involving new compliance developments, updates, applications or clarifications.
  • Independently owns the writing of final analyses of all new federal regulations impacting compliance, and update and maintain current compliance publications.
  • Proactively engage with the broader compliance team in fulfilling operating procedures and timelines to issue these updates across various channels.
  • Leads and leverages America's Credit Unions' compliance experts, driving the compliance team to produce new content and adhere to new content process flow and governance.
  • Work closely with compliance solutions and education leaders on strategy and as a key member of the compliance advisory group.
  • Provide strategic leadership and supervision to the team of Compliance attorneys.
  • Ensure Compliance staff are fulfilling the duties of their role and maintaining the day-to-day operations of the Advocacy agenda.
  • Provide regular feedback and work with staff on the establishment of performance goals; conduct quarterly performance reviews.
  • Contributes ideas, strategies and efficiencies to the 'what's next' of product design.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of experience as a compliance attorney/compliance counsel.
  • 2+ years of experience leading and supervising a team of staff.
  • Juris Doctorate (JD), and a member in good standing of a state or DC bar association.
  • Deep understanding of financial institution laws and regulations and proven success providing analysis on complex legal issues.
  • Credit union operational experience strongly preferred.
  • Must be a continuous learner who maintains a comprehensive knowledge of ever-changing federal laws, regulations, guidelines, interpretive rulings and policy statements, federal bylaws, legal opinions, and court rulings impacting credit unions.
  • Proven capability to quickly differentiate state versus federal issues.
  • Experienced at managing a team; ability to deliver regular feedback, hold people accountable, and ensure consistently high performance.
  • Proven ability to think ahead, creatively problem solve, and take initiative.
  • Solid listening and investigative skills, and an ability to organize information in a way that is clear and not redundant.
  • Demonstrated agility and willingness to pivot quickly to address new projects and requests as needed.
  • Strong professional team player. Able to build meaningful relationships, work collaboratively, influence a range of stakeholders, and manage conflict effectively.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with an ability to bring clarity to complex topics and adapt writing seamlessly for various audiences.
  • Strong presentation skills that result in an effective and well-understood transfer of knowledge.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite.
  • Ability to travel up to 20+ days per year.
