About the position

Under the general supervision of the Assistant/Director of Nursing for Ambulatory Care, the Head Nurse will schedule, assign, guide and instruct Nursing personnel in patient care activities. Delegates direct or indirect care of patients, based on staff qualifications.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises, educates, orients and makes patient care assignments for professional and non-professional staff based on acuity, workload and staff competencies/skill level.
  • Completes monthly schedules and aligns staffing with provider schedules.
  • Treats co-workers, patients and families with dignity and respect.
  • Serves as a patient advocate.
  • Ensures patient care is provided in accordance with established nursing standards of care.
  • Conducts periodic rounds in the practice and facilitates patient flow, communication and problem resolution.
  • Serves as a resource person and role model for staff.
  • Mentors, educates, motivates and fosters professional growth in staff.
  • Works collaboratively with Administration and Directors of Service to foster a team approach in the management of the practice.
  • Ensures processes/mechanisms in place for proper follow up of abnormal results and reporting Reportable Diseases/Conditions in a timely manner.
  • Identifies and promptly addresses all patient safety issues.
  • Ensures all equipment, supplies and drugs are in working order and not expired.
  • Participates in performance improvement activities and projects and other committees as assigned.
  • Promotes open communication within the practice and conducts regularly scheduled meetings with staff.
  • Participates in the hiring of new staff.
  • Coordinates orientation for new staff and annual mandated inservices and other training for all staff.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of new initiatives, i.e. Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH).
  • Monitors staff attendance and performance, conducts counseling sessions in accordance with Human Resource policy/procedure for progressive disciplinary process.
  • Participates in facility wide committees as assigned.
  • Assumes responsibility for professional growth. Maintains nursing skills through participation in continuing education programs.
  • Performs other duties as requested.

Requirements

  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written and ability to collaborate with other health professionals.
  • Knowledgeable of the Nursing Process, the New York State Nurse Practice Act and local, state and federal regulations.
  • Ability to plan, problem solve, make decisions, set priorities and take appropriate actions.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to promote change.
  • Customer service orientation.
  • A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State.
  • Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA).
  • One (1) year of experience as a registered nurse.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor Degree in Nursing.
  • Four years' experience in Ambulatory Care nursing.
  • Certification in Ambulatory Care Nursing preferred.
