About the position

The Guidance Counselor will develop and implement a comprehensive school guidance program aimed at fostering the physical, social, intellectual, emotional, and vocational growth of students. This role involves coordinating activities, providing individual and group interventions, and serving as a consultant to both the school and the community, while upholding the standards of the counseling profession.

Responsibilities

  • Support existing programs focused on student growth.
  • Coordinate activities that support the guidance and counseling program.
  • Provide information and facilitate guidance activities for students, staff, and parents.
  • Serve as a consultant to the school and community.
  • Provide individual and group short-term interventions based on current needs.
  • Uphold the standards of the counseling profession.
  • Determine guidance priorities and formulate measurable objectives based on local assessed needs.
  • Provide regular feedback to school administration on the evaluation of the current guidance program.
  • Work with staff to encourage a student-oriented philosophy in school activities.
  • Help integrate the guidance program within the total school program.
  • Communicate with parents and the community about available services.
  • Establish and maintain contact with school and community resources.
  • Assist in understanding personal and social development.
  • Facilitate groups and presentations on pertinent issues.
  • Provide prevention strategies for issues like chemical dependency and teenage pregnancy.
  • Conduct orientation/training programs for students, parents, and staff.
  • Provide mediation for behavior changes and conflict resolution.
  • Support staff in developing positive rapport with students.
  • Assist teachers in identifying students who would benefit from counseling.
  • Provide information to aid in understanding educational goals.
  • Interpret test results to students, parents, and staff.
  • Provide resource materials and expertise on issues affecting students and families.
  • Provide crisis intervention as appropriate.
  • Use interventions for detrimental situations affecting well-being.
  • Support individuals in interpersonal relations, communication, and decision-making.
  • Make referrals to school and community resources when necessary.
  • Participate in policy development concerning guidance and counseling.
  • Stay informed about developments in the counseling profession.
  • Follow legal and ethical standards of the counseling profession.
  • Supervise extracurricular activities as designated by the principal.
  • Determine schedules for Middle and High School.
  • Provide information on colleges and programs for graduate planning.
  • Write recommendations for students for job and education applications.
  • Participate in school teams and committees.
  • Support district initiatives.
  • Accept other responsibilities as deemed necessary by the principal.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in school counseling or National Certified Counselor credential.
  • Valid New Mexico counselor license.
  • 3 years of experience in public school teaching and/or related counseling experience.
