The Guidance Counselor assumes major responsibility for counseling and guidance services for students assigned at the building level. This position involves scheduling students in their program of studies, implementing testing programs, and acting as a consultant to parents regarding their child's progress and adjustment. The candidate will participate in the 8-Step Process of instruction and remediation/enrichment, provide personal counseling for students experiencing adjustment difficulties, and use data to guide instructional decision-making while working collaboratively in a Professional Learning Community. Additionally, the counselor will guide students regarding career development, help them obtain financial aid for post-high school education, and refer students to outside agencies for assistance when necessary. Responsibilities also include the registration and orientation of new students and assisting with the coordination of case conferences. Urban education experience and an extensive background in designing and implementing innovative programming for adolescent students and families are preferred.
