About The Position

This position is available only to enrolled American University students and is ideal for those seeking to build experience, grow skills, and contribute to the university community. The Honors and Scholars Programs, part of Undergraduate Education & Academic Student Services, supports undergraduate research through various fellowships and funding opportunities. This Graduate Assistant (GA) role specifically supports these undergraduate research efforts by coordinating across the six undergraduate academic schools and colleges. The GA will be responsible for advertising and promoting research opportunities, updating the undergraduate research web page, maintaining Qualtrics applications and databases, evaluating funding requests, and notifying applicants of their status. Additionally, the GA will process funding reimbursement requests, facilitate the selection of Summer Scholars by forming a faculty selection committee, assemble application packets, serve as a resource to the committee, and coordinate research librarians. The GA will also monitor scholar progress, conduct check-ins with faculty mentors, plan the annual presentation of summer scholars' research, assist scholars in preparing for presentations, and coordinate with the library for project archiving.

Requirements

  • Must have a bachelor's degree.
  • Currently enrolled in a master’s or doctoral program.
  • Must be enrolled in the Ed.D. program in the School of Education.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Effective time management skills.
  • Desire to serve as a mentor to enhance the academic, personal, and social development of college students.
  • Leadership skills, including the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with individuals and with small and large groups.
  • Dedication to building relationships with staff and student leaders to foster community within the program.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Qualtrics, Canvas, website maintenance, and social media platforms preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate across the six undergraduate academic schools and colleges to advertise and promote research opportunities.
  • Update the undergraduate research web page.
  • Update and maintain Qualtrics applications and databases.
  • Evaluate funding requests and notify applicants of their status.
  • Process funding reimbursement requests.
  • Facilitate the selection of Summer Scholars by creating a selection committee of faculty, assembling application packets, serving as a resource to the committee, and coordinating research librarians.
  • Monitor the progress of scholars throughout the summer.
  • Perform check-ins with faculty mentors.
  • Plan the annual presentation of the summer scholars’ research in the fall semester.
  • Work with scholars to prepare them for their presentations.
  • Coordinate with the library to archive their projects.
  • Respond to student and faculty inquiries about undergraduate research opportunities and provide feedback on applications.
  • Use professional judgment and knowledge of research methods to make recommendations on funding proposals.
  • Coach students on the public presentation of their research leveraging campus partners.
  • Assist with administrative functions including communication, application development, scheduling, funding disbursements, website development/upkeep, and social media posts.
  • Assist in the distribution, collection, organization, and analysis of program data.
  • Coordinate with school and college-based offices that oversee undergraduate research opportunities to ensure equity and continuity in funding requirements and award amounts.
  • Plan and execute the annual public presentation of the Summer Scholars and Artists research projects.
  • Assist with the planning and execution of the annual AU Honors Research Conference.
