About the position

The Governor's Summer Internship Program (GSI) offers college students hands-on experience in their field of study, specifically within Indiana Disability Rights (IDR). The internship focuses on research, communication, and advocacy related to abuse, neglect, and discharge of individuals with disabilities. Interns will work under the guidance of an attorney and engage in various projects that enhance their academic and professional skills.

Responsibilities

  • Identify and execute one major project related to agency needs and academic area of study
  • Create, develop, and sustain the programmatic efforts for the assigned discipline
  • Analyze data and feedback to provide recommendations
  • Partner with other relevant stakeholders to promote and enhance the quality of projects
  • Collaborate with State of Indiana agencies to ensure effective implementation of internal and external initiatives
  • Review investigation records
  • Research and write memos utilizing academic databases and publicly available information
  • Submit Freedom of Information Act requests
  • Consult with IDR staff on cases and projects
  • Attend committee or workgroup meetings with IDR staff
  • Maintain professional and timely communication with clients, IDR staff, and partners

Requirements

  • Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate with an accredited post-secondary institution and have completed at least one (1) year of undergraduate education
  • Academic focus on nursing, social work, pre-med, psychology, sociology, or other related area with a special interest in disability rights
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to analyze data sets related to discipline
  • Ability to build relationships, establish credibility, and influence leaders at all levels
  • Ability to conduct well-informed research
  • Ability to solve complex, critical problems
  • Ability to review and make recommendations on proposed changes to relevant policies and procedures
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Strong organization skills
  • Excel in written communication
  • Comfortable working individually and with others, including individuals with a variety of disabilities
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products, such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Familiarity with, or a willingness to learn, a unique case management system
  • Capable of conducting internet research
  • Self-motivated

Benefits

  • This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period
