About the position

The Governor's Summer Intern position at the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) focuses on providing college students with hands-on experience in wetlands and stormwater management. Interns will engage in various projects that enhance their academic knowledge while contributing to the agency's mission of protecting human health and the environment. This role offers opportunities for networking, skill development, and real-world application of academic studies.

Responsibilities

  • Identify and execute one major project related to agency needs and academic area of study
  • Create, develop, and sustain programmatic efforts for the assigned discipline
  • Analyze data and feedback to provide recommendations
  • Partner with relevant stakeholders to promote and enhance project quality
  • Collaborate with State of Indiana agencies for effective implementation of initiatives
  • Perform field work related to wetland resources and stormwater management assessment
  • Assist program staff in processing and reviewing applications for construction projects and permits
  • Review and draft permit documents for senior program staff
  • Assist in revising and developing program resource materials
  • Perform research to identify water quality measures for stormwater management
  • Update and develop outreach materials for wetlands and stormwater initiatives
  • Assist with data management and entry into program databases and GIS
  • Assemble and scan program documents for entry into the Agency Virtual File Cabinet.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student with an accredited institution
  • Completed at least one year of undergraduate education
  • Academic work in a related field
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to analyze data sets related to discipline
  • Ability to build relationships and influence leaders
  • Ability to conduct well-informed research
  • Ability to solve complex problems
  • Basic understanding of biological, wetland, soil science, hydrology, or natural resources

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with data management and GIS
  • Familiarity with environmental regulations
  • Previous internship experience in a related field

Benefits

  • This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven-month continuous period.
