About the position

The Governor's Summer Intern position at the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) focuses on recycling and education outreach. This internship provides college students with hands-on experience in environmental management, allowing them to contribute to projects that promote recycling and waste reduction while enhancing their professional skills and marketability.

Responsibilities

  • Identify and execute one major project related to agency needs and academic area of study
  • Create, develop, and sustain programmatic efforts for the assigned discipline
  • Analyze data and feedback to provide recommendations
  • Partner with relevant stakeholders to promote and enhance project quality
  • Collaborate with State of Indiana agencies for effective implementation of initiatives
  • Assist in developing outreach materials for recycling and waste management programs
  • Provide outreach at various events, conferences, and workshops
  • Develop a database of statewide municipal curbside recycling programs
  • Research data to create or update agency recycling fact sheets
  • Review, manage, and update information in recycling and drop-off locations databases
  • Assist schools, non-profits, and local communities with recycling education programs
  • Plan and organize teacher training workshops and summer environmental education programs
  • Assemble outreach presentation kits and materials

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student with an accredited post-secondary institution
  • Completed at least one year of undergraduate education
  • Academic work in a related field
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to analyze data sets related to discipline
  • Ability to build relationships and influence leaders
  • Ability to conduct well-informed research
  • Ability to solve complex problems
  • Ability to review and recommend changes to policies and procedures
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and basic internet use
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills
  • Dependable and self-motivated
  • Ability to work well in a team setting

Nice-to-haves

  • Environmental background (not required but beneficial)
  • Experience in outreach or education programs

Benefits
