About the position

The Governor's Summer Intern position at the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) offers college students hands-on experience in geology and environmental management. Interns will engage in fieldwork, data collection, and research related to groundwater monitoring and environmental compliance, while also developing professional skills through networking and workshops.

Responsibilities

  • Collect GPS data from groundwater monitoring wells, explosive gas probes, and piezometers at Land Disposal Units throughout Indiana.
  • Resolve issues with Electronic Data File (EDF) data from groundwater monitoring wells and related equipment.
  • Research IDEM geology, groundwater, and explosive gas records from hard copy files for digital entry.
  • Identify and execute a major project related to agency needs and academic study.
  • Create and sustain programmatic efforts for the assigned discipline.
  • Analyze data and provide recommendations based on feedback.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to enhance project quality.
  • Familiarize with the EDF downloading process and run the EDF tool to download data.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student in an accredited institution with at least one year of undergraduate education completed.
  • Enrolled in a geology program.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to analyze data sets related to geology.
  • Capability to build relationships and influence leaders.
  • Research skills to conduct informed investigations.
  • Problem-solving skills for complex issues.
  • Ability to review and recommend changes to policies and procedures.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Ability to walk and drive long distances.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook).
  • Ability to utilize the internet for research and agency databases.

Benefits
