About the position

The GIS/Cultural Resources Specialist position at Colorado State University (CSU) is designed to support the Joint Region Marianas (JRM) on the Island of Guam. This role involves providing technical support and assistance related to cultural resources management, particularly concerning military training and testing activities. The specialist will be responsible for creating and maintaining GIS data and maps, conducting impact assessments, and ensuring compliance with relevant regulations. The position requires a combination of office and fieldwork, necessitating strong GIS skills and the ability to work collaboratively with various stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Provide on-site technical support to the JRM Cultural Resources Manager regarding cultural resources management activities.
  • Create, maintain, and provide GIS data and maps for cultural resources assessments.
  • Conduct quarterly impact assessments related to military training and testing.
  • Manage and maintain geospatial databases to ensure data accuracy and compliance with standards.
  • Respond to data requests and manage project scope deliverables and timelines.
  • Assist in cultural resources management actions as specified by the JRM Cultural Resources Manager.
  • Utilize GPS technology to collect geospatial data of cultural properties and ensure accurate data collection in the field.
  • Prepare reports and documentation in compliance with federal regulations and standards.

Requirements

  • BS/BA degree in Geography, Computer Science, Geographic Information Systems, Anthropology, Archaeology, or related field.
  • Five years of post-graduate professional work experience applying spatial data standards and maintaining metadata.
  • Proficiency in GIS software including ArcGIS 10.X, ArcGIS Pro, and Survey123.
  • Excellent working knowledge of mapping cultural resources using GPS technology.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to use compass, maps, and GPS devices.
  • Demonstrated excellence in verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be physically able to carry and handle equipment up to 25 pounds.

Nice-to-haves

  • MS/MA in Geography, Computer Science, Geographic Information Systems, Anthropology, Archaeology or related field.
  • Expert knowledge of ArcGIS software and cartography.
  • Experience with predictive modeling techniques and validation.
  • Knowledge of federal historic preservation laws and regulations.
  • Experience in the Pacific region, especially Mariana Islands.
