As a Summer College Intern in our Ashland, VA office, you will play an integral role in the success of our organization and the early formation of your professional career. You will work under minimal supervision or in collaboration with our knowledgeable, dynamic staff on a wide variety of projects. There are two levels for interns: Level 1 (Freshman and Sophomores) will primarily be assigned field tasks on construction materials testing projects, including field observation, sampling and testing of materials like soils, aggregates, concrete, grout, masonry, asphalt, and structural steel placement, followed by clear documentation of results. Level 2 (Juniors, Seniors, and Graduate students) will perform Level 1 tasks along with office assignments, assisting in report creation, soil classification, and other technical roles as directed by a professional.

Requirements

  • Commitment to work at least 10 weeks during the summer months (weeks do not have to be contiguous)
  • Reliable vehicle for construction sites
  • Valid driver's license and satisfactory driving record
  • Participation in a pre-employment drug screening and background check
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 60-80 pounds (soil and concrete samples, nuclear gauges, etc.)
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical procedures and use measurement tools

  • Civil Engineer (Geotechnical) students highly desirable
  • Other Geology or Engineering disciplines are encouraged to apply
