About The Position

George’s Flea-less Market Associate plays a vital role in creating a welcoming, organized, and customer-focused shopping experience. This position involves receiving, sorting, and pricing donated goods; stocking and merchandising the sales floor; assisting customers with purchases; and maintaining a clean, safe, and inviting store environment. The Associate also supports donation intake, operates the cash register, and helps to promote the store’s mission—turning community donations into meaningful impact.

Requirements

  • Ability to successfully pass a pre-employment background check.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with customers, donors, and volunteers.
  • Detail-oriented and accountable, ensuring accuracy in, tracking donations, transactions, and merchandise handling.
  • Ability to work extended periods standing, bending, lifting (up to 30–50 pounds), and performing repetitive tasks.
  • Basic proficiency with office equipment, cash registers, and point-of-sale systems.
  • Tact, professionalism, and empathy with community members and when handling sensitive situations.
  • Clean driving record with a valid state-issued driver’s license.
  • Commitment to the Maryland SPCA’s mission and values.
  • Open to learning new protocols and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Greet and assist customers, answer questions, and provide guidance on product selection to ensure a positive shopping experience. Handle challenging situations with professionalism and empathy.
  • Receive donated items, sort, fold, hang, and prepare merchandise for display according to store guidelines. Maintain accurate records of donations and ensure items are ready for sale.
  • Arrange and maintain product displays, rotate stock, and assist with special sales events. Operate cash registers, process transactions, handle cash, and credit cards, and balance registers at the end of shifts.
  • Keep the store clean and organized, including sweeping, dusting, cleaning windows, and maintaining donation areas. Ensure safety and accessibility of aisles and workspaces.
  • Assist with training, directing, and supporting volunteers, ensuring adherence to store policies and procedures. Provide guidance on donation processing, merchandising, and customer service. Communicates volunteer needs for the store with the Volunteer Coordinators.
  • Track sales summaries, prepare deposits for finance, and maintain knowledge of store policies, procedures, and ethical standards. Occasionally assist with scheduling, ordering supplies, and reporting to management.
  • Driving vans and various company vehicles.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
