About the position

TRC is seeking an early career to mid-level Environmental/Civil Engineer, Geologist, or Environmental Scientist to join their Engineering, Construction & Remediation team in Chicago, Illinois. The role involves supporting various projects related to environmental compliance, renewable energy, and civil engineering, with a focus on regulatory compliance and project management. The ideal candidate will have 2 to 5 years of relevant experience and a strong desire for professional growth within a collaborative and innovative environment.

Responsibilities

  • Work independently or as part of a project team, demonstrating excellence in communication and analytical skills.
  • Involve in all project aspects including design/study development, construction management, and client meetings.
  • Conduct field assessments and environmental site assessments, including data evaluation and report preparation.
  • Develop Spill Prevention, Control and Countermeasures (SPCC) Plans and Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP).
  • Assist with compliance related to stormwater, industrial wastewater, and hazardous waste reports, ensuring all permit requirements are met.
  • Provide engineering and permitting support for alternative energy development projects.
  • Perform Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments (ESA) and prepare reports.
  • Conduct engineering calculations related to soil, stormwater, and groundwater, and assist with civil aspects of monitoring and remediation.
  • Manage or assist Project Managers with proposals, design fee estimates, schedules, and client relations.
  • Travel regionally and state-wide as needed, with travel expectations ranging from 0% to 40%.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Civil, Geological, Environmental Engineering, or equivalent discipline.
  • 2-5 years of environmental and/or civil engineering experience with a consulting firm.
  • Strong communication and writing skills, with the ability to manage multiple deadlines.
  • Proficient in technical writing and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Detail-oriented with effective management of multiple tasks or projects.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to pass a background check for client site access.

Nice-to-haves

  • 40-hour HAZWOPER health and safety training with current 8-hour refresher.
  • Knowledge of City of Chicago or state regulations other than Illinois.
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) Certification or plans to earn certification within six months.
  • Professional Engineer and/or Geologist license or willingness to obtain licensure.
  • Additional trainings and certifications related to the environmental field.
  • Experience with railroad clients.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD and/or ArcGIS or other environmental software.
