About the position

The internship program at the Center of Excellence (CoE) in Data Science and Bioinformatics at LabCorp provides students with hands-on experience in solving real-life problems in data sciences and bioinformatics. Interns will work on specific bioinformatics projects under the guidance of CoE personnel, contributing directly to LabCorp's research and development efforts. This role offers a unique opportunity to engage with various data science disciplines, including artificial intelligence, machine learning, and bioinformatics, while fostering collaboration and learning within the LabCorp IT organization.

Responsibilities

  • Work on specific bioinformatics projects under the guidance of CoE members.
  • Analyze SARS-Cov-2 viral genome samples to gain insights into the pandemic's spread.
  • Research and develop next-generation sequencing (NGS) analysis for LabCorp's laboratory tests.
  • Develop pipelines for integrating non-coding variants in disease and HLA allele typing for transplant samples.
  • Conduct bioinformatics analysis for LabCorp's microbiome offerings.
  • Evaluate performance of tools for Copy Number Variation (CNV) identification for genetic tests.
  • Perform data mining and predictive modeling of diseases using laboratory test data.
  • Develop disease prediction models using machine learning and AI for various diseases.
  • Characterize HLA alleles using novel genomics and bioinformatics tools to improve transplantation survival rates.
  • Develop a hybrid on-premise-cloud bioinformatics workflow.

Requirements

  • Pursuing a BS, MS, or Ph.D. degree in computer science, bioinformatics, or a related discipline.
  • Enjoy solving problems; inquisitive and analytical; engaged and motivated.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Basic understanding of genomics and biology.
  • Familiarity with genomics-related files and formats such as fastq, BAM, and VCF files.
  • Experience in artificial intelligence and statistical learning.
  • Knowledge of statistical methodologies and machine learning techniques such as neural networks and graphical models.
  • Experience with deep learning techniques such as CNN, LSTM, and RNN.
  • Proficiency in Python or R, with the ability to write and debug code.
  • Strong data visualization skills.
  • Familiarity with machine learning libraries or frameworks such as PyTorch and TensorFlow.
  • Experience with rational and non-structured databases is desirable.
  • Experience using cloud technologies such as AWS.

  • Experience in bioinformatics analysis.
