About the position

The General Manager has responsibility for all activities connected with processing a systems contract from the time that the request for quotation is received until the equipment is operating satisfactory in the customer’s shop and the customer has remitted payment. Also maintain activities to ensure total customer satisfaction.

Responsibilities

  • Full profit and loss (P&L) responsibility.
  • Ensure acceptable financial results by meeting revenue and booking targets.
  • Total customer satisfaction.
  • Manage, coach and develop the leadership team.
  • Drive accountability and ownership through all layers of the business.
  • Prepare competitive and technically competent proposals.
  • Risk mitigation.
  • Support Sales and Applications in the preparation of proposals ensuring that the customers’ expectations are properly reflected in the technical concepts, completion schedule and contract cost budget, and that the budgeted gross margin is adequate.
  • Provide strategic leadership and overall operational direction and consistency to enhance productivity, quality and customer service.
  • Identify, develop and implement progressive and standardized methods of continuous improvement.
  • Define and maintain standards of performance.
  • Develop capital and major maintenance improvement projects.
  • Improve systems and processes to match world class standards.
  • Responsible for the P&L, delivery and reliability of projects, customer satisfaction, governmental compliance, employee safety and continuous improvement of costs and processes.
  • Drive and develop a performance management culture through coaching and/or coordination with HR for training and development.
  • Develop, communicate and implement mid- and long-term goals and production plans for areas of responsibility to ensure continued excellence, including appropriate contingency and risk planning.
  • Prepare annual operating budgets, capital project requests and establish productivity goals and standards for each area of responsibility.
  • Monitor and control expenditures and labor costs to operate within approved budget guidelines.
  • Identify variances and potential corrective actions.
  • Establish and monitor department labor and overhead budgets and monitor spending.
  • Provide for the administration of department employees including training, development and discipline.
  • Assist with the presentation of proposals to customers to ensure complete mutual understanding and agreement of the content.
  • Negotiate contract price and terms of payment with the customer.
  • Clear disputes, warranty problems, incomplete items and any other matters that stand in the way of the customer making final payment.
  • Interface and cooperate with Sales, Divisional and Corporate executives including observance of inter-department and interdivisional systems, routines and communications that are essential to overall company efficiency.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in life science technology or engineering with a sound knowledge of customer manufacturing (preferably a mechanical or systems engineering degree).
  • Minimum of ten (10) years’ experience in management/leadership capacity in a manufacturing or high-tech environment.
  • Strategic planning and goal setting abilities with a track record of implementing change, turn-around initiatives and process re-engineering solutions.
  • Recent history of accomplishment in leading manufacturing projects is a definite asset.
  • Maturity, presence and perceived level of competence to deliver results, achieve credibility and respect from within.
  • Good communication skills both orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of lean manufacturing and six sigma processes is a definite asset.
  • Solid understanding of complex operations and supply chain management.
  • Basic understanding of factory automation systems and equipment including PLC’s robotics and software programming.
  • Budgeting and financial accountability skills.
  • Extensive understanding of complex sales and business development with long life cycles.
  • The human relation skills required to effectively manage and motivate a large workforce while maintaining good relationships between management and employees and avoiding third party intervention.
  • Strong mindset to coach/lead and instill a sense of urgency, discipline and rigor throughout the business.
  • Ability to work well with all levels of management, executive leadership and support staff.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, delegation and a collaborative management style.
  • A demonstrated commitment to high professional ethical standards.
  • Ability to operate in a fast-paced, high-tech environment.
  • Computer literacy as applied to manufacturing management.
  • A working knowledge of PC based Microsoft applications for business is preferred.
