About The Position

Oakland County is seeking a skilled maintenance professional to support the operation and maintenance of County facilities. This is an excellent opportunity to utilize your technical knowledge and troubleshooting abilities while working on a variety of building systems that directly support County employees and the residents we serve. The position is onsite and involves performing preventive, corrective, and general maintenance on County-owned buildings, facilities, and equipment. Responsibilities include troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining electrical, plumbing, pipefitting, heating, cooling, and refrigeration systems, as well as conducting inspections, responding to maintenance requests, and coordinating with contractors.

Requirements

  • Be a high school graduate; OR have completed the state requirements for the General Educational Development Test (GED).
  • Have at least two (2) years of full-time work experience in commercial building maintenance and involving the use of one or more of the following mechanical/electrical trades: electrical, plumbing-pipefitting, heating, cooling and refrigeration; or in a related recognized facilities or building mechanical trade.
  • Possess a valid motor vehicle operator's or chauffeur's license.
  • Pass the complete examination, including the employment medical, established for this classification.
  • Successfully complete the six month probationary period.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive, corrective, and general maintenance on County-owned buildings, facilities, and equipment.
  • Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain electrical, plumbing, pipefitting, heating, cooling, refrigeration, and other building systems.
  • Conduct inspections to identify maintenance needs and ensure facilities remain safe, functional, and efficient.
  • Respond to routine and emergency maintenance requests in a timely manner.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, technical manuals, and work orders.
  • Install, repair, and replace building equipment, fixtures, and system components.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, inspections, repairs, and materials used.
  • Coordinate work with contractors, vendors, and County staff to support facility operations.
  • Utilize current Countywide and department-specific software applications to document work and complete assignments.
  • Performs maintenance and repair duties in one or more of the facilities or building mechanical specialties including electrical, plumbing/pipefitting, heating, cooling and refrigeration, and other related work to maintain County facilities, utilities and properties.
  • Inspects, tests and performs scheduled preventive maintenance programs in County facilities to ensure the efficient operation of building systems including electrical, gas utilities, steam, plumbing, heating, air conditioning and all system controls.
  • Maintains materials, tools and equipment to ensure that they are in proper operating condition.
  • Assists higher level maintenance employees or contractors in performing the more difficult skilled work in major building and mechanical maintenance projects including electrical, plumbing, heating and cooling, and other work performed on County facilities.
  • Prepares work areas by erecting temporary structures, moving furniture, materials and equipment and removing unused material and equipment.
