About the position

The Functional Material Engineer position at RTX Corporation involves working within the Physical Sciences Department of the RTX Technology Research Center. The role focuses on the development and advancement of polymer matrix composite materials and manufacturing technologies for aerospace and defense applications. The engineer/scientist will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to innovate and deliver solutions that address critical challenges in the industry.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and advance novel polymer matrix composite materials and manufacturing technologies.
  • Conduct materials growth and characterization applicable to electro-optical, infrared, or radio frequency responses.
  • Collaborate with team members from diverse backgrounds in a dynamic environment.
  • Prepare technical presentations and reports for leadership and customer review.
  • Operate independently in the laboratory while contributing to team objectives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Materials Science Engineering, Physics, or a related field with 5+ years of experience, or a Master's degree with 3+ years of experience, or a PhD.
  • Experience in materials growth (mesoscale and/or thin film) relevant to EO/IR/RF response, device fabrication, and characterization.
  • Fundamental understanding of how material properties and processing impact functional performance.
  • Knowledge of mesoscale and thin film deposition processing.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • PhD in Materials Science, Physics, Engineering, or related field.
  • Prior experience in a research or product development organization.
  • Ability to perform multi-physics modeling and understanding of ab initio analysis.
  • Experience in writing and reviewing white papers and proposals.
