About the position

The Import Manager will oversee the Freight Forwarding import operations department, ensuring the overall direction and performance of the team. This role requires a strong understanding of Freight Forwarding Import Operations and involves working closely with the Branch Manager to achieve business objectives in a fast-paced environment. The Import Manager will lead the import operations staff, contribute positively to team success, and manage day-to-day operations while maintaining compliance with regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the Freight Forwarding import operations department.
  • Manage the import operations staff and ensure productivity and quality standards are met.
  • Support day-to-day import operations as required.
  • Train and develop the import operations team.
  • Create and maintain Standard Operating Procedures for import operations.
  • Review weekly Accounts Receivable Reports and communicate status to the Branch Manager.
  • Investigate and plan the most appropriate route for shipments considering cost, transit time, and security.
  • Negotiate contracts, transportation, and handling costs.
  • Prepare all transportation documentation to meet Customs and insurance requirements.
  • Liaise with third parties to move goods according to customer requirements.
  • Arrange air transport for urgent and high-value freight.
  • Coordinate US Customs Brokerage to guide freight through import procedures.
  • Maintain communication and control through all phases of the journey, including management reports and statistics.
  • Manage multiple customers globally, coordinating shipments between carriers and modes of transportation.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 2-5 years of managerial or supervisory experience in the freight forwarding industry.
  • High school diploma or GED; post-secondary education preferred.
  • Proven leadership capabilities and ability to work flexible hours and overtime as needed.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to solve problems independently and in a team environment.
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office products.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a fast-paced, high-pressure setting.
  • Ability to obtain Certification for Dangerous Goods.
  • Knowledge of state, federal, and international laws and regulations related to freight forwarding.
