About the position

The Forensic Scientist or Trainee position at the Central Laboratory of the Virginia Department of Forensic Science involves performing forensic biology examinations, including the identification and detection of blood and other body fluids, DNA analysis, and reporting findings for the criminal justice system. The role requires communication with legal and medical officials, as well as providing training to law enforcement on evidence handling. This position is grant-funded and is open only to current employees of the agency.

Responsibilities

  • Perform forensic biology examinations at the Central Regional Laboratory.
  • Identify and detect blood and other body fluids.
  • Conduct DNA PCR-based STR fluorescence imaging analysis and comparisons of genetic material.
  • Access CODIS for data entry and evaluation of candidate matches.
  • Prepare reports of findings, including statistical calculations for the criminal justice system.
  • Testify in court as an expert witness.
  • Communicate with medical and legal officials regarding testing procedures and results.
  • Instruct law enforcement officials on the handling of evidence.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, forensic science, or a related scientific field.
  • Minimum of six months forensic human DNA laboratory experience.
  • Successful completion of a documented training program from an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratory in forensic DNA PCR-based STR analysis.
  • Experience as a qualified DNA casework analyst in an accredited forensic laboratory.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety and QA/QC procedures.
  • Ability to testify in court through experience and/or training.
  • Valid driver's license and/or reliable transportation.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience as an expert witness providing courtroom testimony.
  • Familiarity with ISO/IEC 17025:2017 and ANAB accreditation criteria.
  • Experience with CODIS software for DNA casework profiles.
  • Experience teaching forensic related courses or conducting forensic training.
  • Experience conducting forensic Y-STR analysis.
  • Certification by a nationally recognized body.
