About the position

The Food Service Worker Leader position at the Department of Veterans Affairs involves overseeing food preparation and service in the Nutrition and Food Service department at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg, WV. This role requires leadership skills to guide lower-grade food service workers and ensure high-quality service to patients. The incumbent will communicate instructions, maintain safety and sanitation standards, and provide on-the-job training while ensuring compliance with facility policies.

Responsibilities

  • Communicate instructions and information to other employees about work tasks.
  • Maintain current knowledge and answer questions regarding procedures and policies.
  • Lead activities in the production and service areas, especially in the absence of a Supervisor.
  • Provide on-the-job training to lower-graded food service workers and document training provided.
  • Complete safety and sanitation inspection checklists and initiate corrective actions as needed.
  • Review daily work assignment sheets and adjust assignments to ensure productivity.
  • Check work in progress to ensure compliance with instructions and quality standards.
  • Ensure food production and service areas are set up properly and timely to avoid service delays.
  • Monitor and record refrigerator/freezer temperatures and ensure proper food labeling and storage.
  • Participate in the Nutrition and Food Service Performance Improvement Program.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and supervise food service staff.
  • Knowledge of food preparation and service procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors and staff.
  • Experience in maintaining safety and sanitation standards in food service.
