About The Position

The County of San Diego has current openings for Fleet Technicians to maintain and repair the County's fleet vehicles. The Department of General Services (DGS) is responsible for the overall management of all County vehicles, including acquisition, electrification, disposal, inventory, regulatory compliance, maintenance, and fueling. The Fleet Services Division owns and operates one of the largest government vehicle fleets in the State of California, consisting of over 4,500 vehicles and equipment. Fleet Services includes Acquisitions, Electrification, Maintenance, and Contracts & Compliance. There are eight maintenance locations, seven mobile maintenance units, 30 fuel sites, and 125 contracts in place for parts, service, and repairs. Fleet Technicians perform preventive maintenance and minor repair tasks, diagnostics, inspections, smog testing, and address maneuverability problems on automotive, truck, construction, and industrial equipment. Incumbents in this class may act as lead workers, providing technical guidance and training to less experienced technicians performing preventive maintenance tasks.

Requirements

  • Two (2) years of experience servicing motorized vehicular equipment, including lubrication, in a commercial, industrial, or governmental service center.
  • Completion of appropriate coursework from an accredited U.S. college or university, or certified foreign studies equivalency may substitute for the experience requirement on a year-for-year basis.
  • A valid California Class C driver's license is required at the time of appointment.
  • A valid California Class A or B driver's license must be obtained within twelve (12) months of appointment and maintained throughout employment in this class, for technicians who perform public road testing on equipment requiring an A or B driver's license to operate on public roads.

Nice To Haves

  • Possession of A/C and Refrigerant licenses are highly desirable.
  • ASE certification in four (4) of the eight (8) areas for either an Automobile Technician or Medium/Heavy Truck Technician is highly desirable.
  • Possession of a valid California Class A or B driver's license is highly desirable when not required for a specific assignment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive maintenance and minor repair tasks on automotive, truck, construction, and industrial equipment.
  • Conduct diagnostics, inspections, and smog testing.
  • Address maneuverability problems on vehicles and equipment.
  • Act as lead workers, providing technical guidance and training to less experienced technicians (may be required).
  • Maintain and repair the County's fleet vehicles.
