About The Position

The Nevada Department of Transportation is hiring for a Fleet Service Worker 3 located in Las Vegas, NV. This position will assist with a variety of maintenance and operational tasks. Responsibilities include servicing equipment by lubricating parts, changing oil and filters, and performing other preventive maintenance to minimize repairs. The role also involves tire replacement, washing vehicles, and supporting equipment movement as needed. Additional duties include maintaining cleanliness in the shop and participating in yard clean-up to ensure a safe and organized work environment. Fleet Service Workers service vehicles and/or light, medium, and heavy construction and maintenance equipment; perform preventive maintenance; issue vehicles to employees; and perform basic diagnostic and repair work.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent education and three years of experience which included diagnosing and performing basic vehicle/equipment repairs and adjustments; performing preventive maintenance on a variety of vehicles/equipment; and maintaining vehicle/equipment records and reports.
  • One year of experience as a Fleet Service Worker II in Nevada State service.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.
  • Working knowledge of principles of automotive repair and preventive maintenance.
  • Working knowledge of common methods of hand and power tools and other equipment used in the adjustment and repair of vehicles/equipment.
  • Ability to work independently and follow through on assignments with minimal direction.
  • Ability to interact diplomatically with vehicle/equipment users to explain policies and resolve complaints.
  • Skill in performing preventive maintenance activities for a variety of vehicles/equipment.
  • Skill in diagnosing routine mechanical/electrical failures and determining which repairs are necessary to restore a system to proper working condition.
  • Skill in performing vehicle maintenance and repair work on light, medium and heavy equipment and vehicles.

Responsibilities

  • Servicing equipment by lubricating parts, changing oil and filters, and performing other preventive maintenance to minimize repairs.
  • Performing preventive maintenance; tune engines, order parts and make minor repairs to ensure equipment is in proper working condition.
  • Examining vehicle/equipment records or preventive maintenance schedule to determine the type of service required.
  • Completing requisitions for required filters and parts.
  • Checking fluid levels and adding or changing fluids as necessary.
  • Replacing filters from the engine, transmission, hydraulic and fuel systems.
  • Lubricating the vehicle/equipment in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications.
  • Replacing spark plugs and wires.
  • Replacing brakes and adjusting ignition timing.
  • Replacing the distributor cap and rotor.
  • Changing belts and hoses.
  • Charging or replacing batteries.
  • Replacing lamps.
  • Repacking wheel bearings.
  • Conducting safety inspection of systems and components.
  • Coding repair tasks and maintaining records of work performed.
  • Repairing or replacing tires and single or multi-piece rims and wheels which includes removing the tire from the axle; deflating the tire or pumping out the calcium chloride; repairing or replacing the tire; reassembling the tire on the wheel; inflating the tire; balancing and mounting the tire.
  • Washing and detailing vehicles/equipment to ensure a presentable appearance; steam cleaning the engine or entire vehicle; cleaning windows, upholstery, and carpets.
  • Providing assistance to mechanics and storekeepers by picking up, delivering, and returning equipment and parts and verifying the accuracy of accompanying invoices and credit memos.
  • Reserving vehicles for employees; fueling vehicle/equipment; collecting usage data and preparing summary reports; and scheduling vehicles/equipment for service.
  • Performing related duties as assigned.
  • Serving as lead worker to other Fleet Service Workers.
  • Maintaining cleanliness in the shop.
  • Participating in yard clean-up to ensure a safe and organized work environment.
