About the position

The Firefighter/Medic position is a full-time role responsible for protecting life and property through combating, extinguishing, and preventing fires, as well as providing emergency medical services (EMS). The work often requires strenuous physical exertion and includes participation in code enforcement activities, supervised drills, and training in firefighting and EMS skills. Employees will also engage in maintenance of equipment and facilities, public education activities, and may be required to relieve higher-ranking officers. The position demands attendance at annual training to maintain required certifications and licenses.

Responsibilities

  • Administers EMS to injured persons, frequently using advanced techniques to restore cardio-pulmonary functions including the administration of medications and advanced life support (ALS) procedures.
  • Lays and connects hose, holds nozzles, and directs water streams, raises and climbs ladders, and uses chemical extinguishers and other equipment at the scenes of fires.
  • Participates in fire drills and attends classes in firefighting, EMS, and related duties.
  • Performs general maintenance work on Fire Department facilities and property.
  • Inspects buildings and premises for compliance with fire laws and aids in the investigation of arson cases as directed.
  • Conducts tours of stations for scout, civic, and other interested groups.
  • Maintains regular and reliable attendance.
  • Demonstrates superior customer service, integrity, and commitment to innovation and efficiency.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or its equivalent; an Associate Degree in Fire Science is preferred.
  • Certification from the State of Michigan Firefighters Training Council as a Firefighter II or equivalent.
  • Possession of a current, valid Paramedic certification from the State of Michigan.
  • Certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) prior to hire.
  • Must possess a current, valid Driver's License with a clean driving history.
  • Successful completion of the Conference of Western Wayne (CWW) Written and Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) within specified timeframes.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in firefighting and emergency medical services.
  • Knowledge of firefighting principles and practices, emergency medical techniques, and fire codes.
