About the position

The Financial Aid Counselor position is responsible for providing guidance and support to current and prospective students and their families regarding financial aid requirements, application procedures, and available aid programs. This role involves reviewing student files, calculating eligibility for various financial aid options, and ensuring compliance with federal, state, and institutional regulations. The counselor will also engage in customer service, maintain professional relationships with other departments, and participate in recruitment activities.

Responsibilities

  • Counsel students and parents on financial aid application procedures and available programs.
  • Provide feedback on Office of Financial Aid procedures and policies.
  • Establish relationships with other university departments such as Student Accounts and Admissions.
  • Serve on financial aid committees as needed.
  • Maintain knowledge of software systems like Jenzabar JFA and J1 products.
  • Represent the Office of Financial Aid at recruitment events.
  • Stay updated on federal and state financial aid regulations through training and conferences.
  • Manage specific financial aid programs such as work-study and scholarships.
  • Process confidential financial aid documents accurately and completely.
  • Review and assess student financial aid applications and determine eligibility.

Requirements

  • Associates Degree plus 1 to 2 years' experience in a financial aid environment or equivalent education and experience.
  • Working knowledge of federal and state aid regulations and policies.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with computerized financial aid applications, preferably Jenzabar.
  • Experience in a diverse, multicultural environment.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
  • Prior experience as a Financial Aid Counselor or equivalent.
