About the position

The Field Technician I position at SGS involves collecting samples and conducting inspections of products or raw materials for laboratory analysis. This entry-level role requires working under immediate supervision to ensure compliance with safety processes and procedures while performing various sampling and preparation tasks. The technician will be responsible for labeling samples, delivering them to the laboratory, and maintaining equipment cleanliness and organization.

Responsibilities

  • Collect samples of products and raw materials being transferred to containers, vessels, barges, trucks, and/or rail.
  • Label sample containers and related paperwork with identifying data, location, date, and time of collection.
  • Deliver samples to the laboratory for analysis.
  • Prepare samples by reducing and dividing them into appropriate sizes.
  • Gather samples at specified locations and times, ensuring compliance with safety procedures.
  • Perform sample screening and related physical tests as required.
  • Ensure all equipment and containers are organized and cleaned before and after use.
  • Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) relevant for tasks at all times.
  • Adhere to internal standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • No prior experience required, unless mandated by state law.
  • Valid driver's license may be required if driving a company vehicle.
  • TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Card) may be required.
  • 24-hour MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration) certificate may be required, with training available through SGS.
  • Intermediate English language skills required (advanced preferred).
  • Basic mathematical skills required (intermediate preferred).
  • Intermediate reasoning skills required to solve problems logically and practically.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally to internal or external customers.
  • Ability to follow directions accurately and complete tasks within required timeframes.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to work independently and under moderate supervision.
  • Team player attitude with a focus on customer care.

Nice-to-haves

  • Intermediate proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel) preferred.
