About The Position

Motorola Solutions is a world leader in professional mobile communications systems, implementing mission-critical digital mobile communication systems for Government & Public Safety Communications customers. The Field Service Technician will provide technical support for specialized systems and product applications, focusing on Northern Illinois projects. This role involves advanced troubleshooting of software-driven electronics, setting up communication infrastructure, and optimizing RF and Broadband architectures, including legacy analog and advanced digital P25 data systems. The technician will test, document, optimize, and maintain complex communications systems, providing weekly reports. Expertise in wired communications systems (LAN/WAN), server hardware, operating systems, software infrastructure, logging recorders, RF interfaces, and wireless/wired networking equipment is essential. A blend of computer networking skills and knowledge of multi-site RF communication systems is required.

Requirements

  • Must live in or be prepared to relocate to the Northern Chicagoland area.
  • Travel of 25% or more may be required within the service area.
  • Proficiency with various test equipment is required, including Communication System Analyzers, Ethernet Link test sets, T1 Test Sets, TIMS, and Digital RF Power Meters.
  • Candidates must understand Motorola Conventional, SmartNet, and MCC Console systems, along with ASTRO A7.x Digital systems and their respective installation procedures.
  • Experience with P25, LMR, or other RF infrastructure components like radios and consoles is necessary.
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and the Motorola Radio Programming Software suite.
  • At least 4+ years of relevant experience with the following systems and equipment: Motorola Base Stations: STR, GTR, and Quantar series, Consoles: MCC7500, T1 Circuits and Channel Banks, IP Network configuration and computer networking.
  • Must possess a current, valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to be on-call 24/7/365.
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. indefinitely is required.
  • Must be able to obtain background clearance as required by government customer(s).
  • This position is subject to working in high security areas governed by the US Department of Justice's "Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Security Policy" and therefore requires successfully passing a more stringent fingerprint background check administered by Motorola Solutions Inc. customers.
  • 4+ years of experience in one of the following: LMR, RF Systems, Radio Communications, Radio Frequency, Wired/Wireless Communication Systems, Military, Motorola equipment, IT Systems, Telecommunications, Public Safety, Engineering or Networking equipment.
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. indefinitely is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Preference will be given to those with experience in RF Infrastructure Technologies, specifically Motorola SmartZone, Smartnet, and ASTRO Conventional/Trunked equipment.
  • Ideally, the applicant will hold or be working toward a network certification such as Network+, CCNA, or NRS1.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support for specialized systems and product applications.

  • Demonstrate deep expertise in wired communications systems like LAN and WAN, including the installation and configuration of routers, switches, firewalls, and cabling.
  • Manage and troubleshoot server hardware, operating systems, and software infrastructure to resolve application-level issues.
  • Utilize experience with logging recorders, RF interfaces, and various wireless or wired networking equipment.
  • Apply a unique blend of computer networking skills and knowledge of multi-site RF communication systems.
