About the position

The Field Manager for Semester in the West at Whitman College is responsible for overseeing the logistics and operations of an intensive 3-month field program that explores environmental, social, and political issues in the American West. This role involves managing food preparation, supervising students, ensuring safety and hygiene, and facilitating a positive learning environment. The position requires strong organizational and leadership skills, as well as the ability to adapt to various outdoor settings while working closely with students and faculty.

Responsibilities

  • Purchase food and plan meals for 25 people.
  • Supervise food preparation and cleanup, organizing student 'cook crews'.
  • Drive Program Vehicles as needed.
  • Organize and supervise camp equipment set-up, maintenance, and takedown.
  • Monitor safety and hygiene for all aspects of the program, particularly kitchen hygiene.
  • Perform miscellaneous tasks as directed by the Program Director, including errands and group troubleshooting.
  • Assist the Technical Manager when needed.
  • Update the Field Manager Manual at the end of the program.
  • Create a cookbook for the program.

Requirements

  • Strong organizational and leadership skills.
  • Ability to consistently follow-through on tasks and assignments.
  • Strong technical knowledge.

  • Demonstrated maturity and sagacity in various situations.
  • Valid driver's license with 3 years of driving experience.
