About the position

Pax Environmental, Inc. is seeking a part-time, on-call Field Archaeologist to assist with environmental compliance archaeological surveys and monitoring. This role involves conducting archaeological inspections, subsurface testing, and preparing detailed reports while ensuring adherence to environmental laws protecting archaeological resources.

Responsibilities

• Conducting archaeological inspections, monitoring, and assessments.
• Performing subsurface testing and surface surveys.
• Participating in excavation, artifact processing, and analysis.
• Responding to wildland fire infrastructure restoration emergencies.
• Conducting Class III cultural resource inventory and Class I surveys.
• Communicating with project managers, construction crews, and field staff to meet reporting requirements.
• Using GPS units and aerial photographs for project navigation and field data collection.
• Taking photographs and detailed notes of site conditions.
• Preparing high-quality technical reports and documents.
• Engaging in frequent fieldwork, often requiring overnight stays.

Requirements

• Minimum bachelor's degree in Archaeology or related field.
• Minimum 2 years of relevant, progressively responsible employment in Cultural Resource Management (CRM).
• Intermediate-level competency in Office 365 and other computer and browser-based software.
• Strong leadership and relationship-building skills.
• Ability to delegate effectively.

Nice-to-haves

• Advanced degree in anthropology, archaeology, historical archaeology, or related field desired.
• Register of Professional Archaeologists (RPA) certification strongly desired.
• Archaeological targeted survey experience.
