About the position

The Fiber Splicer Apprentice will assist a Fiber Splicer in maintaining and installing fiber optic networks, including FTTP, FTTDP, and FTTN/FTTLA projects. This role involves performing maintenance, responding to emergencies, and working on-call. The apprentice will be responsible for splicing fiber optic cables, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring the broadband network operates efficiently. The position requires travel and the ability to work overtime, including night shifts.

Responsibilities

  • Install and maintain the company's broadband network, focusing on fiber optic cable splicing and troubleshooting.
  • Perform testing and turn-ups of subscriber drops in both inside and outside plant environments.
  • Conduct power meter testing and other duties as required.
  • Make cross-connects on fiber distribution frames and test fiber optic cables using OTDR and Power meter and Source.
  • Install and maintain equipment of the fiber broadband network.
  • Perform fiber optic splicing tasks, including fusion splicing and splice closure preparation during approved times or maintenance windows.
  • Locate underground fiber-optic cables and maintain records of daily activities, including material usage forms.
  • Perform preventive maintenance of the fiber network, including inspections and repairs.
  • Maintain buildings and grounds to ensure safety and good condition.
  • Operate bucket trucks and other equipment safely.

Requirements

  • Fiber splicing overview training, including knowledge of optical time domain reflectometers (OTDRs).
  • Basic networking training and basic fiber training.
  • Experience with fusion splicing and OTDR.
  • Basic knowledge of computer programs, smartphones, electricity, and electronics.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with employees across departments.
  • Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical people.
  • Attention to detail and ability to prioritize multiple projects.
  • Ability to lift up to 100 pounds and frequently carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in telecommunications or related field.
  • Familiarity with safety principles in the workplace.
