About the position

The Ferry Operations Manager is responsible for overseeing shore operations at a high-volume ferry terminal for the N.C. Department of Transportation. This role involves managing vessel and shore personnel, ensuring compliance with safety standards, and handling administrative tasks such as budget analysis and contract negotiations. The position requires effective planning and scheduling of crew operations to meet varying traffic volumes throughout the week.

Responsibilities

  • Direct all vessel and shore personnel at the ferry terminal.
  • Oversee shore support facilities including maintenance of buildings and vessels.
  • Analyze and recommend operating budgets for ferry operations.
  • Negotiate and recommend maintenance and repair contracts with service providers.
  • Plan and schedule crew complements for vessel operations.
  • Manage overtime work for operations that vary seasonally according to traffic volumes.
  • Enforce safety standards as implemented by OSHA, US Coast Guard, and other agencies.
  • Ensure vessels are staffed with U.S. Coast Guard certified crewmembers.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of the operation and maintenance of ferry vessels.
  • Ability to communicate, apply, and enforce NCDOT Ferry Division policies.
  • Experience in planning, organizing, and delegating tasks.
  • Experience in creating schedules and managing budgets.
  • Experience in scheduling and dispatching ferry crews and equipment.
  • Knowledge of applicable USCG rules and regulations impacting ferry operations.
